Young people today are navigating a complex and often overwhelming world. Across Georgia and beyond, rising rates of anxiety, depression, and social isolation point to a growing need for meaningful connection and support. Youth philanthropy offers a powerful and proactive way to help meet that need.
At its core, youth philanthropy invites young people to give their time and talents to causes that matter. When students engage in philanthropy, they build decision-making skills, develop empathy, and strengthen their sense of purpose, all of which are closely tied to improved mental well-being. Research shows that giving and volunteering can help reduce stress, increase feelings of happiness, and foster a sense of belonging.

Through the Athens Area Community Foundation’s partnership with the Resilient Northeast Georgia initiative, youth philanthropy provides a local pathway to both personal growth and community impact. We aim to equip high school students with the tools to think critically, give intentionally, and connect with their community.
Our work is strengthened by collaboration with local organizations like Advantage Behavioral Health Systems and Nuci’s Space, which provide vital mental health resources and programming for young adults across our region.

Creating meaningful opportunities for youth takes a collaborative effort. Whether you’re an educator, nonprofit leader, fundholder, or community partner, there are many ways to support youth philanthropy and expand its impact across Athens. Partner with us to help equip the next generation with the confidence they need to thrive while also strengthening and supporting the well-being of our entire community.
The Athens Area Community Foundation is a public grantmaking foundation that builds community by encouraging long term giving through funds created by caring donors.
